El Niño Update

California has seen a fair amount of swell this winter season thanks to the warmer waters to the south from the weather pattern known as El Niño.  Much of the state has been drenched in rain but the plus side is the surf.
*An El Niño advisory continues from the Climate Prediction Center (CPC). A significant El Niño persisted throughout the equatorial Pacific during January 2010. Although sea surface temperatures cooled in late January, the waters were warm enough to support deep tropical convection. Southern California has seen a marked increase in precipitation during January. The series of storms in mid-January led to flooding, mudslides and coastal damage. While water managers welcome the rain and snowfall throughout the state, it is hoped the progression and intensity of the systems expected to come will allow for some rest between wet periods.

The graphics below show January sea surface temperature anomalies for previous strong El Niños and the 2009/2010 El Niño.     *http://meteora.ucsd.edu/cap/elnino_calif.html

The Channel Islands – Tri Fin

The first in a video series that highlights on True Ames Surf Fins. This video shows the Channel Islands Futures compatible fin. The channel islands fin is good for mid to heavy weight surfers, specifically for pointbreaks like Rincon. This fin is also available in glass on, and FCS compatible. These Hexcore fins are very light and durable, giving you  the best fin for your shortboard.

Check out the video clip for more info and to see this fin on our online store click here. Stay tuned for weekly Surf Fin highlights. Next week we will look at one of our featured longboard fins.

Travel Story

On my trip to Australia last spring while working the new movie WAY OF THE OCEAN the surf was pumping day in and day out. Australia was experiencing their “El Nino” and conditions were great. Check out wayoftheocean.com/blog/ for video clips, photos, and the stories from behind the scenes.

This particular shot was up on the bluff at a secret spot in New South Wales.  No crowds, plenty of waves and lots of wildlife under those waves. The fishermen just out on the end of the rocks were pulling in Yellowfin like crazy and said they spotted a pretty hefty looking white shark just the day before. I guess that is pretty much “natural crowd control.” After shooting photos and video most of the day conditions cleaned up even more and the waves started to imitate some West Oz point with clear blu water and offshore winds grooming perfect left tubes..  Glad I got a shot of my board before I snapped my it on my 3rd wave.  Needless to say my session was cut short but I still have the image of my last barrel before it clipped me and sent me to the beach.
